The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events in the world, as ‘Super Bowl Sunday’ has become one of the most popular days in the sports calendar. The event features the NFC and AFC champions going head-to-head in the NFL’s Championship game.

With the Chiefs vs. Eagles in 2023, there have been 57 total Super Bowl games going back as far as 1967 when the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever Super Bowl. Since then, 19 other franchises have won the Super Bowl to make it an even 20.

Super Bowl victories are not easy, especially back-to-back championships. With the NFL Playoffs featuring a single-elimination format, it makes repeat champions more difficult to accomplish than in other sports that feature best-of series.

The NFL Teams with Most Wins in History

There are some franchises that have historically been associated with the Super Bowl due to wins or appearances. Some franchises are also associated with the Super Bowl but for the wrong reasons, such as the Atlanta Falcons or Buffalo Bills. Here are the teams with the most wins in Super Bowl history.

6 Super Bowl Wins

Two teams have a total of six NFL Championships, both coming from the AFC in the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New England Patriots

The last New England Super Bowl win came in 2019 against the Los Angeles Rams in a defensive battle, 13-3. Ironically, the Rams were the same franchise that kick-started Tom Brady’s Super Bowl greatness. Brady’s first and last Super Bowl with the Patriots were both wins over the Rams.

Despite all the Super Bowls collected by New England while Tom Brady was quarterback, they only won the game one time in back-to-back years. Those years were 2004 and 2005 against the Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s safe to say the greatest rival for Tom Brady and the Patriots were Eli Manning and the New York Giants – beating New England twice in the Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers also have six Super Bowl wins, although their most recent trophy came in 2009 against the Arizona Cardinals. Pittsburgh was able to win two Super Bowls between 2006 and 2009 but hasn’t been able to win since.

Most of the Steelers’ Super Bowl trophies came back in the late 70’s when the ‘Steel Curtain’ defense led Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl wins between 1975 and 1980. The Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys in two of those four Super Bowls, both wins coming in the Miami Orange Bowl.

5 Super Bowl Wins

Two franchises have exactly five Super Bowl trophies, rivals from the NFC. The San Francisco 49ers and the Cowboys have crossed paths multiple times in the playoffs, including recently.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers have actually been to two Super Bowls since 2013, but haven’t been able to win one since 1995 when they put up nearly 50 points against the San Diego Chargers. Most of the 49ers’ Super Bowl wins came in the 80s, winning four between 1982 and 1990.

In two of those four Super Bowls, the 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals by five points or less. One of the most famous 49er Super Bowls came in 2013 when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens in a game where the lights actually went out. It was also the ‘Harbaugh Bowl’ that featured brothers as head coaches for opposite teams.

Dallas Cowboys

Perhaps the most famous NFL franchise in the world is also a Super Bowl leader. The Cowboys haven’t even sniffed the Super Bowl since 1996 when they beat their rival the Steelers. Dallas actually won three Super Bowls in four years (1993-1994, 1996) while winning two others in the 70s.

So despite the Cowboys being one of the NFL’s best Super Bowl franchises, it’s been a while since Dallas reached the big game.

4 Super Bowl Wins

Another pair of NFC teams have seen four Super Bowl victories, both coming recently as well. The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants have both late history and early history in the Super Bowl, led by Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

Green Bay Packers

Bart Starr won the first-ever Super Bowl MVP when he led the Packers to a Super Bowl I win over the Chiefs. The Packers won again the very next year, but couldn’t lift the Lombardi Trophy again until 1997 when Bret Favre beat the Patriots in Louisiana.

In 2013 another great quarterback named Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay to a Super Bowl win over Pittsburgh. The Packers have actually won two of the last three Super Bowls they’ve been in, but haven’t reached the big game in a decade.

New York Giants

The G-Men have quietly secured four Super Bowl wins, half of which came against Tom Brady and the Patriots. The Giants seem to have a lot of rival teams, but none are more relevant to the Super Bowl than the Patriots.

New York ended the Patriots undefeated streak during a low-scoring Super Bowl, along with being part of the most spectacular highlights with a David Tyree helmet catch. Prior to the Eli Manning led New York Super Bowl teams, the Giants won two Super Bowls in the late 80s.

New York beat Denver in 1987 for its first Super Bowl win, while beating Buffalo in 1990. The win over Buffalo was the first Super Bowl loss for the Bills, in what would become four straight years of losing the Super Bowl for that franchise.

3 Super Bowl Wins

Three franchises have accumulated three Super Bowl titles, two of which reside in the AFC West division. The Denver Broncos and the Raiders have three Super Bowl wins under their belts, while the Washington Commanders also have three to their name.

Denver Broncos

John Elway is the ringleader for this Broncos franchise earning two Super Bowl wins, while Peyton Manning is the other. Led by Hall of Fame quarterbacks, the Broncos have secured three Super Bowls between 1998 and 2016.

Denver was able to win back-to-back years in the late 90s, defeating Atlanta and Green Bay. In fact, the last two Denver Broncos Super Bowl wins have come against NFC South teams. Despite being led by Manning, the 2016 Super Bowl win for Denver was in large part due to Von Miller and the elite defense.

Washington Commanders

All of the Commanders’ Super Bowl wins have been way back in time, with their most recent win coming in 1992. Washington, actually, became the second team in 1992 to be part of Buffalo’s four straight Super Bowl meltdowns.

The Commanders also won in 1983 and 1988, all of their Super Bowl wins coming within a decade of each other – but over three decades ago. Two of the three Super Bowl wins for Washington also came in California.

Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas Raiders

Just win baby. That became the popular catchphrase of Raiders’ owner Al Davis during the Raiders Super Bowl peak. That peak came in the late 70s and 80s when the Raiders won three Super Bowls for two different cities.

The Raiders won in 1977 and again in 1981, before winning their third in 1984 against Washington. They played for Oakland in 1977 and 1981, but moved to Los Angeles and won their 1984 Super Bowl while playing there. The Raiders haven’t been back to the Super Bowl since losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003.

Which NFL Player has the Most Super Bowl Wins?

Tom Brady has won more NFL Super Bowls than any other player, winning seven total. He won six with the New England Patriots and won once with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is considered the GOAT of football for many people because of this accomplishment.

Brady’s first and last Super Bowl wins as a Patriot came against the Rams, but his last Super Bowl win was against the Kansas City Chiefs as a Buccaneer. That Super Bowl also marked the first time the Super Bowl venue was also the venue for the winning team. Ironically, it happened again the following year when the Los Angeles Rams won in Inglewood, California.

Perhaps the most famous Super Bowl win for Tom Brady came in the only Super Bowl that went into overtime. The Patriots were trailing the Falcons 28-3 during the 2017 Super Bowl, only to come back and win in overtime.

Winners, Losers, and The Ones Who’ve Never Made it

The winner of the Super Bowl gets the iconic Lombardi Trophy. The award was named after Vince Lombardi, the first coach to win a Super Bowl. While some franchises have lifted the Lombardi Trophy numerous times, some clubs haven’t even been to a Super Bowl before.

There are currently four NFL franchises that have never reached the Super Bowl. Those clubs are the Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Detroit Lions.

There are currently three NFL franchises that have reached one Super Bowl but lost. Those clubs include the Arizona Cardinals, the Tennessee Titans, and the Los Angeles Chargers.

There are currently five NFL franchises that have reached the Super Bowl multiple times but have never won. The Falcons and the Carolina Panthers have been to two Super Bowls. The Cincinnati Bengals have been to three Super Bowls. Both the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings have been to four Super Bowls, but the Bills lost all four of their Super Bowls in consecutive years.
